Project Redefinition

As the time passes concepts and ideas get mixed with cultures and societies, as every society perceives things from its own standards, customs, norms and values. So when something becomes so corrupted that it loses its own charm, its real “essence”, its true meaning, its own soul, it has to be re-identified and redefined.

INTRODUCTION:

What is redefinition? It is the act of giving new definitions to words or concepts for which there is already a prevalent definition or understanding.
As the time passes concepts and ideas get mixed with cultures and societies, as every society perceives things from its own standards, customs, norms and values. So when something becomes so corrupted that it loses its own charm, its real “essence”, its true meaning, its own soul, it has to be re-identified and redefined.
At times, the true meaning of things is buried under so many layers of misconceived concepts that we need to all-together redefine it from the very beginning. Redefining becomes a dire need to know things in a better way and to recognize the forgotten meanings. Sometimes we need to rectify the twisted and innovated meanings attached with the actual concept. At times we need to add things into the definitions that have become static.

WHAT ARE WE REDEFINING?

This question becomes the main idea of what we are trying to do. We are not redefining the dictionary meanings of things. We intend to tackle things as they are commonly perceived. The only thing that we have safely assumed before the project is “Our Creator knows us more than we do”.
Islam as a religion is not merely a “religion” it’s a deen (complete code of life). We keep on focusing on this “islam a deen-issue” but we do not focus why this deen has turned into a mere “religion” and why Muslims are in such a great confusion when they have a “complete code of life”
The problem that we neglect is that ‘with time, Islam got introduced to different societies; it got mixed up with their customs, traditions and norms. We mixed up our own cultures with Islam, we began to indulge in bid’aat (innovations), we perceived Islam as our society “defines” it and eventually we lost the “true” meaning of Islam. We’ve ended up in a mess where the majority is defining ‘Islam’ according to its needs rather than defining its needs in light of ‘Islam’. Islam gives us a “way of thinking”, how we have to see things.
So, in the very beginning lets redefine our understanding of deen. Deen is not a matter of personal life. It is something that is much more than a set of rituals. It is a complete code of life. It’s a system that has the guidelines smaller institutions like homes to vast states and empires. It shapes the way we perceive life, and motivates us to channelize our energies for the duty of being a Khalifah of Allah on earth.
If the Muslims want to redeem the past glory of Islam; if they want to see Islam triumphant in the world; if they want to enjoy a self-satisfied life under Islam then they have to redefine Islam as a system. For, it is the system, which can deliver these good to them - not religion. As “a code of life” we do not need anything else to be our guide other than Islam. It’s a beacon that not only shows us the path, but illuminates our mind to think in the right direction.
And We have revealed the Book to you explaining clearly everything, and a guidance and mercy and good news for those who submit. (Surah An Nahl 16:89)
Islam Does Not Need Redefinition, because it’s a complete criterion for living, it doesn’t need anything to be added, anything to be re-interpreted and nothing is left in it to be defined. We simply need to go back to the sources (Qur’an and Hadith); to understand the Islamic spirit, and only whence illuminated by this light ourselves, can we understand other things in its light. But for sure, the application of its concepts in a changing world needs to be re-explained in the present language of time for better understanding.
So, we are not redefining Islam, as it does not need to be redefined; rather we are going to redefine: our culture, our traditions, ideas, norms, behaviors, thoughts, in fact each and everything in the light of the divine guidance. For sure, no one can understand all the created-things better than the creator himself.
This is a project which will contain a series of short write-ups on the commonly misperceived concepts in our society. There is a dire need to remove the fog which media, our culture or materialist nature has spread over important concepts. Some of us have even forgotten what ‘success’ and ‘failure’ is.
In the end I include a list of proposed topics on which we need to write. The write-up should include at-least one Ayah and one Hadith which would be the focal point of the article. We should try to keep it as short as possible and it should have a nice flow. Anyone willing to take up any of the proposed topics of contributes in anyway kindly contact:

Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh!

JazakAllah Khair Sis!
“Our Creator knows us more than we do”.Beautifully put...subhanAllah we know yet try to befool ourselves..may AllahSWT protect and guide us!

today one of my friends told me about the practise of girl's side giving dowry because the Prophet (Sallallahu 'ALaihi wassaallam) gave blankets and something else (i dont remember what she said) as dowry to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) since he didnt have anything to support his wife...i dont know if this hadith is authentic...even if it is authentic, people seem to be taking it out of context and are taking loans from banks to give dowry (even though the gona be husband can easily support her financially...

unfortunately i am not eligible to help you in this area since i have very little knowledge related to this...but inshAllah i hope and pray that AllahSWT will grant you, the ones working on this site and every Muslim who's trying to please HimSWT whether through small or big deed will be given Ikhlaas and Istiqaamah in His Cause Alone and may HeSWT accept from us all with His Mercy!

Assalam ualaikum. Masha Allah you're right on target. This is one direction in which we needed to proceed.I would add topics to that list from Psychology, beginning from psychology itself, we need to redefine motives, emotions, thoughts, abnormality, intelligence, perception, langauge etc. I should be able to contribute something on "Death" since my thesis deals with the topic.

Wa 'alaikum as Salam !

Yeah, redefining the very basics like the definition of science and the definition of specific branches of it like psychology is also required. Also, redefining the key-concepts in those branches of science like the ones you pointed out. At first, I thought this project to be more of a 'reminder' than an 'academic' one but your comment has given us a new dimension.

We will be very glad to receive any input from your-side insha'Allah.

Omens-all are fake, lets put our trust in Allah and forget omens. There is a hadith of the Prophet(PBUH) saying something like that and if there really is one it's in the women, i think the house and something else. So thats fake.
