In the previous article ‘ Redefining Success and Failure’ we understood minimum requirements of salvation which included Exhortation to Truth (Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil) in a Jam’aah (group). This article is an explanation of how to look for the victorious group in the current scenario.
A whole nation is being dragged into a huge pit of fire. There is no discrimination, the elderly, the women, the babies all are being thrown mercilessly into the fire. They have been convicted of believing in the oneness of Allah. They have sacrificed their lives and have decided firmly not to give up their faith! A ‘moderate’ of the 21st century is witnessing the event on TV sitting on his easy couch; genocide of a whole nation: ‘they could have hidden their faith until they were strong’, ‘if they were so true why did they face such a terrible defeat’. Rings any bells? Lal-Masjid! Hundreds of people burning in fire, helpless and Allah says: “…that is the great achievement”.
Muslims ‘lost’ in the battle of Uhud, because of mistake of the few, who disobeyed the command. Allah has not promised victory in every encounter even if we follow the rules and commandments; sometimes the victory takes time to come.
If a wound has afflicted you (at Uhud), a wound like it has also afflicted the (unbelieving) people (in Badr); and We bring these days to men by turns, and that Allah may know those who believe and take witnesses from among you; and Allah does not love the unjust. (Surah Ale Imran 3:140)
Allah makes you go through defeat as a test. The defeat of Uhud became a gold-mine of lessons. So, as for the people on the ranks of Taghoot (Shaitaan) they are the losers even if they are able to exterminate a complete Muslim nation. And Muslims are victorious as long as they are steadfast and follow the constants.
Sahaba and Prophet Muhammad went to Makkah with an intention of Umrah, and they were made to go back and sign a truce which seemed humiliating: The Truce of Hudaibiyah. Allah summed up the incident as: Surely We have given to you a clear victory. So, the appearing ‘defeat’ was in essence a victory which became evident in the opening of Makkah.
You lost in Afghanistan, Palestine, Chechniya and Iraq; don’t let it make you lose your path! All this is a preparation for the great victory: “…then there will be a Khilafah on the way of the Prophethood”. The Muslim dominion has shrunk to a ‘zero’ from the vast empires which included the half of the globe. Even in these times there is a victorious group somewhere around you who is a part of the army of Allah for the ultimate plan: Allah drew the ends of the world near one another for my sake. And I have seen its eastern and western ends. And the dominion of my Ummah would reach those ends which have been drawn near me. So, this is a match which surely belongs to the victorious group amongst the Ummah.
In the present scenario, passionate Muslims are struggling to find a group which they can join. Many of us judge the groups by their apparent victories and failures. Allah hasn’t given you a time frame for victory, but he has assured you that it’s going to come. So, don’t fall in the trap of those who are joining Islamic groups that have ‘agreed’ to the secular systems, and don’t be fooled by their apparent victory. Look for yourself a group, which compromises on no Islamic constant, whether it has to go through a genocide, persecution or imprisonment.
A section of my people will not cease fighting for the Truth and will prevail till the Day of Resurrection. (Sahih Muslim)
A group of people from my Umma will always remain triumphant on the right path and continue to be triumphant. He who deserts them shall not be able to do them any harm. They will remain in this position until Allah’s Command is executed.” (Sahih Muslim)
Islam began as a stranger and it will return as a stranger, so, blessed are the strangers. (Sahih Muslim)
Don’t run after numbers. If numbers are to be the judge, the 950 years of Nuh علبه السلام were a failure! There is no concept of following the majority in Islam. ‘My Way and the way of my Sahaba’ is what serves as the torch for us. We’ve to look for the examples set by them and not to get into calculating mathematical majority!
O you who believe! whoever from among you turns back from his religion, then Allah will bring a people, He shall love them and they shall love Him, lowly before the believers, mighty against the unbelievers, they shall strive hard in Allah's way and shall not fear the censure of any censurer; this is Allah's Face, He gives it to whom He pleases, and Allah is Ample-giving, Knowing. (Surah Al Maida 5:54)
The victorious group might be scattered under various labels. So, be on the lookout for the qualities of the victorious group in the above Ayah. If you don’t fulfill the minimum requirements of victory you are a looser even if you win, and you are a winner if you fulfill the requirements of victory even if you lose.
May Allah count us amongst the victorious group الطائفة المنصورة.
